English County Finals at Princes Golf Club, Sandwich, Kent
The Yorkshire team of David Appleyard, Simon Bell, Gareth Evans, James Mason, Nicholas McCarthy, John Parry and Stephen Uzzell retained the English County Championship Trophy on the wind swept links of the Prince's Golf Course, from Gloucestershire, Surrey and Warwickshire.
The Competition began for Yorkshire at 08.30 on Friday morning against Warwickshire, the format being three Foursomes in the morning and six Singles in the afternoon. The day didn't start well with Simon Bell needing a Doctor for a sickness bug and David Appleyard suffering from a stiff neck, Nick McCarthy the reserve, replaced Simon and David struggled round. At lunch, Yorkshire held an advantage of 2 points to 1. Although the players started slowly each day in the singles they accumulated five wins in the afternoon to win by 7 points to 2.
On Saturday against Gloucestershire three Foursome wins in the morning gave Yorkshire a commanding lead at lunch. Only two points were needed from the afternoon Singles to clinch victory. Simon Bell replaced David Appleyard in the Singles but lost to Chris Wood and Nick McCarthy lost to Ed Butler and with the other matches close, the result was in doubt. James Mason won 4 and 3, John Parry secured a half and Stephen Uzzell won on the last hole to secure the victory. Gareth Evans won his match 4 and 3, to clinch victory 6.5 points to 2.5.
On Sunday, Yorkshire played Surrey and three wins would probably secure the title. The Foursomes points were shared 1.5 points each, leaving 1.5 points to win the title. In the afternoon the wind blew as the storm clouds swept in. Thunder and lightening in the distance threatened the golf, but moved away. The first point came from John Parry who won 5 and 4. David Appleyard who won 4 and 3 secured the title and Nick McCarthy ensured at least a halved match with Surrey, winning 2 and 1. James Mason in his final game as an Amateur won his match against Seve Benson by two holes to win the match. Stephen Uzzell clinched victory on the final hole to give a final result of 6.5 points to 2.5.
The Trophy was presented to the Yorkshire Captain, Iain MacKenzie, by Mr Donald Steel, President of the English Golf Union.

The match was played at Ashby Decoy Golf Club, Scunthorpe, in arctic conditions more suited to mid winter than spring. The course was in excellent condition, but playing good shots was affected by a strong blustery wind.

The matches were closer after fourteen holes, but still in Lincolnshires favour, and with eleven matches finished, the singles were tied at five and half points each with the last match playing the eighteenth hole.
