Yorkshire Union Dinner at York Racecourse, Friday November 2nd
The Yorkshire President John Shaw of the Bedale Golf Club said farewell to the Yorkshire Captain Iain MacKenzie and thanked him for his services to the County. Gareth Evans representing the Yorkshire Players also paid tribute to Iain for his support, friendship and leadership to the players during his five year Captaincy. The president also announced Iain's successor as Andrew King from the Garforth Golf Club.

English Golf Union County Finals at Cleveland Golf Club, September 28,29 and 30th.
The Yorkshire team of Adam Best, Gareth Evans, Matthew Evans, Adam Hodkinson, Nicholas McCarthy, John Parry and Stephen Uzzell assembled at Cleveland Golf Club on 26th. September to be greeted with a strong wind coming off the North Sea and occasional heavy showers of rain. This provided very testing conditions for the two practice days but the weather forecast indicated that as the week progressed conditions would improve.

The weather did improve although on day one of the competition the strong wind remained a significant factor. At 8.30a.m. on 28th Yorkshire set out against Wiltshire who were competing in the event for the first time in their 109 year existence. The first hole was not too kind to Yorkshire but as the first series of foursomes progressed Yorkshire gained the upper hand and finished the morning with a comfortable 3-0 lead. The afternoon singles - with Adam Hodkinson replacing Nicholas McCarthy - were well contested in the early holes but Yorkshire's experience showed through towards the end of the round and in the end the county ran out 8.5 to 0.5 winners - a great start.

On day two, Yorkshire were matched against Hampshire, Isle of Wight and The Channel Islands, who had been defeated by Leicestershire and Rutland on day one. The same foursome's pairings and order were retained but it was a less than convincing performance with the morning points being shared 1.5 each. In the afternoon Matthew Evans was replaced by Adam Hodkinson and again Stephen Uzzell lead the way with a good 2/1 win over England international Sam Hutsby. Hampshire drew level when Nicholas McCarthy lost game two. Three of the remaining four games went Yorkshire's way and with John Parry halving his game for the second day running the county finished comfortable winners by 6-3.

The final match on day three was set up for a winner take all as Leicestershire had won their second match against Wiltshire. The weather had improved and the sun was shining but there remained a tricky wind, which had moved towards the north. The foursomes did not start well and Yorkshire never really got on terms and while John Parry and Adam Hodkinson had a comfortable 4/3 victory the other two games went Leicestershire's way to leave Yorkshire trailing 1 - 2 at lunch. At the half way stage in the afternoon singles the result was very finely balanced but probably favouring Leicestershire. However the Yorkshire players' experience and attention to detail began to take over and Stephen Uzzell again lead the way winning the top match against the very experienced David Gibson by 2holes. John Parry - in his last game in Yorkshire colours - was on top form and ran out a 6/4 winner in game 5 and with Adam Hodkinson posting a 4/3 win in game 3 Yorkshire were taking control at 4 - 2 with three games still on the course. In game two Adam Best reached the 18th tee 1 down but on his own course and in front of many members won the last hole and his halved match gave us the ½ point needed to retain the trophy. We looked to the last two games to obtain the extra point to complete the three wins out of three and with Gareth Evans one up with three to play and Matthew Evans 2 down at the same stage it was Gareth who looked the more likely to provide the required result. In the end it was Matthew who displayed all the calmness and experience to win the last three holes to complete the win - while unfortunately Gareth lost by 1 hole. The final result was a 5.5 - 3.5 win and the title Champion County remained securely in the hands of Yorkshire for the third year in a row and the eighth time in the last eleven years. It was also a very fitting farewell to our retiring Captain Iain Mackenzie who has a very unique record of three Championship wins as both a player and a non playing Captain.

The final act was the presentation of the medals to the team and the Trophy to Iain Mackenzie by the President of the English Golf Union Mr. Richard Palmer.

Daniel Willett of the Rotherham Golf Club wins the English Men's Amateur Championship.
dwillettstgeorges.jpg - 92084 Bytes Danny won the English Men's Amatuer Championship, and added to his recent victories as the Yorkshire County Champion and the South of England Champion, at Royal St Georges yesterday, against Mathew Cryer of the Coventry Golf Club.
With clear blue skies and a slight breeze the match commenced at 08.30 and Danny trailed by one after a birdie at the second. and by two after seven, but pin point irons into greens eventually gave him a two hole advantage after 16 holes. On seventeen his drive missed the fairway by two inches and gave him an impossible lie in the deep rough, with Matt Cryer on the green after two shots, Danny had a lunge, moved the ball ten yards into more rough and eventually conceded the hole. A loose drive to the right on eighteen, put him once again into deep rough, Cryer hit the green in two and Danny attempted to move the ball, which went into even deeper rough and led to him conceding the hole, to put the match all square at lunch.
The Club Captain in his closing speech said that the Combine Harvesters woud be coming in this week to cut the rough as the members may never get round the course.
Danny spent most of his lunch break on the practice ground, whilst his friend and caddy for the week Sam Haywood, also from Rotherham, had lunch in the car. Danny got off to a good start in the afternoon with a birdie at the first to win the hole, a birdie at five only got a half but a birdie at six, a 170 yd par three into the breeze, gave him a two hole advantage and a birdie at nine made it three. Holes then changed hands with Danny having a birdie on the fourteenth to be three up again. Both players just missed the green on fifteen, a 473 yd par 4, Danny putted from just off the green to six inches, and Mathew holed a 4ft put to save the match after chipping onto the green. Both players hit the green on the 161 yd par three sixteenth, but twenty feet from the hole, Mathew putted first and the ball stayed on the edge of the hole, Danny rolled his put to 1ft and Mathew conceded the match to give Danny the Championship.

dwillettamateur107.jpg - 146790 Bytes Yorkshire Amateur Champion 2007 is Danny Willett of the Rotherham Golf Club.
The match was eventually settled on the last hole of the thirty six hole final.
At lunch Danny Willett was leading by one hole but Adam Hodkinson won the first hole after lunch to go all square, but was two down after nine holes.
Adam over clubbed on the par three tenth hole, hit the out of bounds wall and bounced back onto the green, won the hole and reduced the deficit to one. Birdies at the next two holes by Adam gave him in the lead by one hole but Danny hit back with a birdie at the long thirteenth to square the match once again. A dropped shot from Danny at the fourteenth gave Adam the lead but a birdie by him at the fifteenth squared the match. Adam birdied the sixteenth but dropped a shot at the par three seventeenth, after missing the green, to square the match. With the match all square at the thirty sixth hole Danny hit a good drive in the middle of the fairway, Adam pushed his drive to the right and his ball plugged in a grass bank close to the bunker, the ball was unplayable and under penalty took a drop and played his third shot short of the green. Danny hit the green with his second shot and rolled his put to three feet, Adam conceded the match after failing to hole his fifth shot.
The Yorkshire President, John Shaw of the Bedale Golf Club presented the trophy in the Moortown Club House to Daniel Willett, Danny thanked the Moortown Golf Club and the Yorkshire Executive for the success of the tournament and the services provided by the host club during the Championship

English County Finals at Princes Golf Club, Sandwich, Kent
The Yorkshire team of David Appleyard, Simon Bell, Gareth Evans, James Mason, Nicholas McCarthy, John Parry and Stephen Uzzell retained the English County Championship Trophy on the wind swept links of the Prince's Golf Course, from Gloucestershire, Surrey and Warwickshire. The Competition began for Yorkshire at 08.30 on Friday morning against Warwickshire, the format being three Foursomes in the morning and six Singles in the afternoon.
The day didn't start well with Simon Bell needing a Doctor for a sickness bug and David Appleyard suffering from a stiff neck, Nick McCarthy the reserve, replaced Simon and David struggled round. At lunch, Yorkshire held an advantage of 2 points to 1. Although the players started slowly each day in the singles they accumulated five wins in the afternoon to win by 7 points to 2.
On Saturday against Gloucestershire three Foursome wins in the morning gave Yorkshire a commanding lead at lunch. Only two points were needed from the afternoon Singles to clinch victory. Simon Bell replaced David Appleyard in the Singles but lost to Chris Wood and Nick McCarthy lost to Ed Butler and with the other matches close, the result was in doubt.
James Mason won 4 and 3, John Parry secured a half and Stephen Uzzell won on the last hole to secure the victory. Gareth Evans won his match 4 and 3, to clinch victory 6.5 points to 2.5.
On Sunday, Yorkshire played Surrey and three wins would probably secure the title. The Foursomes points were shared 1.5 points each, leaving 1.5 points to win the title. In the afternoon the wind blew as the storm clouds swept in. Thunder and lightening in the distance threatened the golf, but moved away. The first point came from John Parry who won 5 and 4. David Appleyard who won 4 and 3 secured the title and Nick McCarthy ensured at least a halved match with Surrey, winning 2 and 1. James Mason in his final game as an Amateur won his match against Seve Benson by two holes to win the match. Stephen Uzzell clinched victory on the final hole to give a final result of 6.5 points to 2.5.
